HOW TO CONFIGURE YOUR PERSONAL LAPTOP FOR THE COLLEGE NETWORK
Students with active domain accounts can now use those credentials to connect to the IEL wireless network. To ensure security there are several steps that need to be taken.
Click here for a video for users of Windows XP.
Click here for a video for users of Windows Vista
When the video starts to play, hit pause || and move the slider back and forth manually if you need more time to follow along. Pay attention to each step along the way.
Student and staff PERSONAL notebooks - the configuration process is the same but note the 'domain' difference below.
Students, use your username (JohnD1234) and password to connect to IEL-STUDENT (the 'domain')
Faculty use your regular IEL account and connect to domain 'IEL'
Mac OS X should see IEL as an 802.1x network, follow through the prompts and supply username, password and domain 'iel-student' - if you have a Mac and can offer more details, email us scotter@iel.spokane.edu
Wireless is available in Pullman, Newport, and at AEC, Hillyard, BCT, Mirabeau Center and many Head Start locations. Coverage should be available in Colville and the remainder of Head Start sites soon.
Additional Information
It seems that some users are still having trouble, here a few pointers:
All 'third party' wireless applications must be disabled
- this seems to pertain to WindowsXP only, Vista uses the built in client at all times from what we can tell
- third party applications include utilities from Belkin, HP, Dell, Gateway, linksys, etc. These are generally represented by bright computer icons, radio towers, a series of bars that go green when connected, etc. This software needs to disabled. Try right-clicking on the icon and selecting 'disable utility' or 'let windows manage' - if that is not an option, double-click the icon - the utility will open, you might be able to disable the utility there. Warning, the keywords are 'let windows manage/handle' (or use WZC) and 'disable utility' - there are other things you might be able to disable - including the wireless apapter itself (just renable it if you do)
- these third party apps almost always sit in the system tray next to the clock (bottom right-hand side of the screen)- the one you want, the native windows client looks just like it does in the video, a small computer with two radio waves coming off it and a red X when it's not connected. The X goes away and the waves turn green when it's connected
- in the beginning of the XP video above we pause on the checkbox that says 'Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings' if this is grayed-out or unclickable it means that you do have another utility managing the connection, use the above suggestions to work around this.
- If you prefer to use the third-party utilities at home, at the coffee shop, etc just reverse the procedure when you leave (re-enable your utility, everything will go back to the way it was - just disable it again next time you are on campus and it will connect automatically)
Delete any previous attempts to connect to the SSID 'IEL'. Windows will make an attempt to connect you automatically. You need to remove any previous instances and start fresh, follow the video step by step.
EVERYTHING needs to be verbatim, boxes checked, IEL capitalized, etc
Two things not quite made clear on the video:
- towards the end, a request for information bubble comes up from the system tray- that's what you click to get the prompt to input the user/pass/domain the screen capture software doesn't capture that bubble, but it will be there. Like in the video, if you don't see that info bubble, disconnect from IEL and reconnect and it will appear
- We used a staff account to log on, so the domain was different. Students need to use their user/pass and the domain IEL-STUDENT
For the hardcore computer people:
- Security Type: WPA/WPA-Enterprise (Vista)
- Encryption method: TKIP
- Network authentication method: PEAP
- Under PEAP - do not validate server certificates (uncheck box)
- No Fast-Reconnect
- PEAP authentication method is EAP-MSCHAP-V2
- Under MSCHAP do not automatically use Windows login information (uncheck box)
