The National Sustainable Building Advisor Program (NaSBAP) offers a 9-month certificate training course and exam specifically designed for working professionals eager to apply sustainable concepts to the buildings they design, develop, and construct. The Sustainable Building Advisor (SBA) course welcomes a diverse range of students drawn from architecture and planning firms, engineering companies, developers and contractors, government agencies, research institutions, resource conservation organizations, utilities and environmental consulting organizations.
The SBA course is unique and exceptional in that it offers:
- In-person instruction and interaction with fellow students in the building, design, and environmental professions
- Local experts as guest instructors, who bring regional knowledge and information resources to the course
- Field trips to exemplary projects
- Hands-on, interactive experiences tailored to adult learners
- Professional accreditation as a Certified Sustainable Building Advisor, upon completion of the course and exam
- Rated as a 400 Level Mastery Course by the USGBC Education Provider Program
- A key component of the Cascadia Sustainability Academy
- Approved by the American Institute of Architects (via the Cascadia Sustainability Academy and the USGBC) for 100 Learning Units (LUs). The SBA course also qualifies for Sustainable Design (SD) and Health Safety and Welfare (HSW) credits. No-hassle credit approval process. Other professional industry organizations accept AIA-approved courses for learning units – contact a representative from your professional organization to learn more!

Learning experience designed for professionals
This nine-month, specialized training program enables graduates to advise employers or clients on strategies and tools for implementing sustainable building. Participants generally meet all-day Friday (8:30 am - 4:30 pm) and Saturday (8:00 am - 1:00 pm) one weekend per month; starting September 21st and generally meeting the third or fourth weekend for the following eight months
By the end of this program, participants will be able to:
- Identify and discuss the key practices of sustainable building.
- Establish competencies in applying LEED™, Built Green™ and other relevant criteria or established guidelines.
- Analyze the costs and benefits of incorporating sustainable building measures.
- Take advantage of financial incentives and technical assistance offered by government, utilities and non-profit organizations.
- Work with architects, designers, builders, building operators, and utilities to improve a building's performance.
- Establish a sustainable design goal for project development.
- Assist in the education and training of staff in sustainable building.
