COMMERCIAL CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

National Sustainable Building Advisor Program

Designed for building professionals, this nine-month, specialized training program enables graduates to advise employers or clients on strategies and tools for implementing sustainable building.

Participants generally meet all-day Friday (8:30 am - 4:30 pm) and Saturday (8:00 am - 1:00 pm) one weekend per month; starting September 21st and generally meeting the third or fourth weekend for the following eight months.

Summer Green Building Workshops

INTRODUCTION TO STRAW BALE BUILDING

This hands-on course will give you both the knowledge and practice you need to tackle your own small straw bale construction project. Kelly Lerner, eco-architect and leading expert in straw bale construction, will teach you the latest innovations in this constantly evolving building technique.

Through lecture, hands-on experience and tour, this course covers:

*FREE FRIDAY STRAWBALE LECTURE, 7-8:30pm, July 18th at CenterPlace in the Valley.

Interested in straw bale construction? This lecture is free and open to the public regardless of participation in the Saturday workshop, however it is required for workshop participants. *Lecture attendance is prerequisite for Saturday workshop.

EARTH PLASTERS

This hands-on course with give you both the knowledge and practice you need to tackle your own small earth plastering job. Earth plasters can be used over regular interior gypsum board walls, and are attractive, non-toxic, healthy, and help regulate interior humidity levels.

Designing and building green is fundamentally different from conventional approaches. Its integrated, holistic nature requires early and ongoing involvement by all parties (owner, architect, contractor, landscape architect, and any specialists or engineers) to brainstorm innovations, agree on the design, and avoid potential obstacles. As a client, you need to be able to identify a skilled and experienced building professionals and be able to communicate your wants and needs. This 3-hour program will help you know the questions to ask and give you a framework for this critical decision.

Passive design is fundamental to green building, takes maximum advantage of sunlight and overall climate, and can be implemented with little or no extra cost! Learn strategies for passive heating & cooling of your home, including: site analysis, ventilation, managing solar heat gains, thermal mass, daylighting, and landscaping.

New! HOMEOWNER ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP PLANNING COURSE

Funded by a Department of Ecology Public Participation Grant (PPG) in partnership with the Inland Northwest Ecobuilding Guild this 21-hour course is designed to help homeowners raise awareness of how their actions affect the environment and how to adopt responsible practices. This course will be a series of seven classes in which participants work with program facilitators to create Environmental Stewardship Plans that reflect their unique values, goals and living situation.
