The Equity Committee achieves the IEL mission by creating a welcoming, inclusive and interculturally competent environment for students, staff and faculty in all their uniqueness.

Creating this environment is a collaborative and continuing effort to educate our entire community on everyday awareness and sensitivity to the diverse characteristics of our community members.

We broadly define diversity to include race, ethnicity, sex, age, sexual orientation, disability, educational levels and gender identity. Based on our information-gathering, discussions and analysis of what is happening at the IEL, we make recommendations to the IEL’s chief executive officer.

Intercultural competence, in its simplest form, is having the knowledge and ability to understand, communicate and interact with people of another culture or background.
