Many  very important verbs in English are IRREGULAR,  but most of the verbs in  English are  REGULAR. Here  are some rules that will help the student with regular verbs in simple past tenses. Please read these rules, and then click on the link at the bottom of this page to go to the first test.

VERBS ENDING IN ----          CHANGE Y TO I         EXAMPLES:
 A CONSONANT + Y                  ADD-- ED                  TRY--TRIED
                                                                                          CRY--CRIED
                                                                                          CARRY--CARRIED
                                                                                           WORRY--WORRIED

VERBS ENDING IN---             DOUBLE THE               EXAMPLES:
ONE VOWEL + ONE                CONSONANT              STOP--STOPPED
CONSONANT                           THEN ADD --D             DROP--DROPPED
 ( BUT NOT "W" OR "Y" )                                                 ROB--ROBBED
