Corinna Luce, Career Builder

Going through a divorce after being a stay-at-home mom for 20 years, Corinna was faced with the unexpected challenge of becoming a working single mom. With little experience to put on her resume, she needed to improve her job skills to make it happen. At WorkSource, she found out about the IEL’s Career Builder program (now Career Transitions), which could teach her marketable job skills in a short amount of time and offered flexible hours. She enrolled and signed up for Microsoft Office 2007, Business English and Business Math.

Corinna remembers the first day of school was very scary for her. Being a quiet, shy person, she was terrified of new beginnings and meeting new people. “But from that first day, I felt more than welcome and at peace at the IEL. With the amazing support and encouragement I received from the staff and other students, I was able to blossom and overcome many obstacles this last year. There never once was a negative word spoken in the classroom and I enjoyed the fact that whenever a student needed assistance, the staff and the students all pulled together to help each other.

There were times when I wanted to give up and I actually broke down and cried in the parking lot or restroom. What helped me persevere was the belief that I CAN do this! I CAN be somebody! I WILL succeed! And I got all that from the friendly staff and fellow students.”

Now with a satisfying job, Corinna encourages others not to give up. “It is much easier to give up than it is to push on and do the best you can. That is all that is expected. ‘Nobody trips over mountains. It is the small pebble that causes you to stumble. Pass all the pebbles in your path and you will find you have crossed the mountain.’”
