Kathy Dyer, Change Point and I-BEST

Unexpected life circumstances brought Kathy Dyer to the Change Point program (now Career Transitions) at the Institute for Extended Learning. After a failed marriage, she started her life over by moving to Spokane from Jacksonville, Fla. She arrived with two of her four children and felt that her life was inside out and upside down. She began searching online for some kind of support and discovered the services, resources and guidance that would give her direction at the IEL.

“I enrolled in the Change Point program and was greatly encouraged by the faculty and staff there. Change Point prepares people to return to work or school. I always dreamed of earning a degree and Change Point gave me the tools to pursue this dream. Even though I was still unsure of a specific degree, I was given information about the
I-BEST program and chose the professional business technology course. I am pursuing two A.A.S. degrees at Spokane Falls Community College, one is the administrative secretary program and the second is information processing. These two degrees overlap and I am now entering my second year.

Change Point and the I-BEST program gave me my first real start. They are well-thought-out programs and meet people where they are. I-BEST is a wonderful stepping stone for entering the academic world. They actually care about you and do whatever they can to help you transition and be successful. The instructors in both programs are phenomenal. I love the fact that I can go back to Change Point if I need resource help. They are always friendly and helpful when I stop in.”

One piece of advice that Kathy would pass on to others is, “Everything takes effort and time, to heal, to grow and to change. Make the effort and take the time, one day at a time.”
