Ruben Salas dropped out of school in the ninth grade. “I had no one at home to make me go (to school), so I didn’t,” the he explains. To support himself, Ruben worked odd jobs coordinated through Job Corps in his home town of Rupert, Idaho. Eventually he began working on a survey crew for a petroleum company building gas stations. The crew traveled throughout the Northwest preparing job sites for the tanks, pumps and piping that comprise a fueling station.
